4-H Program mission statement:
4-H Saskatchewan is a project-based community youth organization. We are dedicated to the growth and development of our members, leaders, volunteers and staff through our motto: "Learn To Do By Doing".
Learn To Do By Doing
I pledge
My HEAD to clearer thinking,
My HEART to greater loyalty,
My HANDS to larger service,
My HEALTH to better living,
For my club, my community, my country, and my world.
There are more than 50 established projects in Saskatchewan with developed project manuals and activity books, but members can also create their own through 4-U Self Determined. All 4-H members in Saskatchewan must complete a record book for their project(s).
The most popular projects in Saskatchewan are:
- Beef. Beef project members select market steer, heifer, cow/calf pair, or feedlot project animal(s) and learn about beef cattle production and management including how to select a quality animal, feed and nutrition, health and welfare, breeding and genetics, judging and showing beef cattle. More than 1/2 of the members in Saskatchewan are involved with the beef project.
- Light Horse. Light Horse members learn how to care, work with and ride a horse. With a focus on safety and building a partnership with your project horse, members develop basic horsemanship skills, as well as an understanding of anatomy, physiology, and health and nutrition. Light Horse members may go on to specialize in specific equine sports or even train their own horses.
- 4-U Self Determined. The 4-U project offers the opportunity to create your own project for any topic you want. Using the 4-U Self Determined Planner, 4-H members set goals, find resources (including a leader/mentor), plan activities, and follow through. Just a few examples of the many 4-U Projects in Saskatchewan include: curling; lego building; art; beekeeping, ranch management, harness driving, restoring tractors; and model building.
- Outdoor Living. Members in the outdoor living project learn everything about the outdoors including camping, wildlife, hiking, safety and the environment. Outdoor Living clubs plan hikes and camping trips to practice their skills.
- Archery. The archery project allows members to learn the technique, safety and equipment of the sport of archery. Members get together to practice or compete at shooting targets and silhouettes.
